That's why controllers like the Continuum, and others where you have direct finger contact, are much easier platforms for developing that kind of control - most people inherently have much finer and more precise finger control than they do arm control. But for genuine musical expression, the kind you get with an acoustic instrument, I see spatial controllers as kind of a dead end, unless you're willing to devote the enormous amounts of time required to develop the grosser muscle control needed for that kind of expression. If you don't care about pitch control, or you're using spatial control as a higher-level kind of control (that is, where your spatial control isn't directly controlling a musical parameter, but is instead controlling a sequencer's speed or a loop's offset or something like that), then that's a different story. The problem I see with spatial controllers is that they are very difficult interfaces for precise pitch control, as a cursory listen to nearly every theremin player on YouTube will tell you. One of the things that makes the Continuum one of the most expressive musical controllers available is that you can very precisely control pitch with it - my own feeling is that true musical expression is a direct function of precise pitch inflection, as well as timbre and dynamics, of course. I use a Continuum with my Buchla 200e system, via the Haken CVC control-voltage interface, as many of you know. They just always seem gimmicky and I tend to pass them over. And I've seen controllers that do similar to what you're describing now. That's cool and all, but I'm not really into waving my arms around and those kinds of things. We have more options than ever in the history of electronic music so I am looking forward to what comes next! Where is the controller that can detect my posture in conjunction with my hand movements? Or the muscle tension in my arms along with finger placement? Or being able to detect circular motion over linear motion?(we can do this in software i guess with a Wii) I would love to see more interfaces that allow for these complex gestures beyond pushing/moving my fingers. Interfaces like the Wii and Buchla lightning start to move in an interesting direction with the ability to combine different simple gestures into more complex ones. Sure some have an additional axis to play with but we are still within the button/slider paradigm. We are still just dealing with buttons/keys of some sorts. ![]() Things like the manta/continuum are interesting but the general trend in many interfaces still does not get beyond the idea of the keyboard(still would love a shorty continuum though!). I often joke that the doepfer ribbon is a fretless keyboard but have come to really like the addition of pressure as a new axis to work with. For the modular, I currently use a Doepfer ribbon and a pair of diy pedals for performances.
